Some JR Freight DD51s underwent renovation work in the 2000s, but the cars that underwent renovation were initially painted in a blue-based paint scheme.

Cars that underwent renovation work after 2004 were painted in a new red-based paint scheme, and the blue-painted cars were gradually repainted in the new paint scheme by around 2010.
