About the German Schwimmwagen Type 166 (Wide Wheel Version)
Designed to meet the challenges of Europe’s rivers and wetlands, the Schwimmwagen was an amphibious vehicle based on Ferdinand Porsche’s Kübelwagen. Its four-cylinder gasoline engine produced 25 horsepower, giving a top speed of 80 kilometres per hour on land. A manually lowered three-bladed screw propeller allowed water travel at up to 10 kilometres per hour. While most Schwimmwagen used narrow 133 millimetre tyres due to material shortages, the wide 200 millimetre tyres offered improved off-road performance.
